The annual ride to Ft. Hood is the beginning of 2 days visiting the "Great Place." The largest military base in the US is home of III Corps and features the vaunted 1st Calvary. It has been one of the best commands to have in the US Army and the last commander, Gen. Mark Milley is now the Chief of Staff of the Army.

This is the 8th year of Ride 2 Recovery and the UnitedHealthcare Texas Challenge is the 49th Challenge event in its history. One of the very first warriors we ever worked with back in January of 2008 was Bruce Gannaway. He had lost his leg while serving in the Army. He had been an avid runner and now had to find a new normal. He was introduced to Ride 2 Recovery by Ross at Walter Reed on our very first visit. He was one of three warriors we met that day and would have been on the first-ever Challenge if not for an infection in his leg that required surgery two weeks before the ride.
Last month, Lt. Col. Gannaway was named the commander of the WTB at Ft. Hood and is now riding every week with the Project HERO program based there. Life goes full circle! |

Riders stop for lunch at Cleo Bay Subaru

One of the other guests riding today was Mike Shenk. He has ridden in every Texas event going back to the first ride. This ride has had some of the worst weather in the history of Ride 2 Recovery, including freezing rain, snow and high winds. The harsh weather tends to bring an even stronger bond and Mike has been there each time. His time as Inspector General at Ft. Hood helped solidify the special relationship between Ft. Hood and Ride 2 Recovery. |

Women's Day
|
 |
Day 3 was Women's Day for the Challenge and one of the largest group of female service member participation was on full display with more than 40 women taking the road. One of the great leaders in the group is a Captain at the Ft. Hood WTB, Kay Davis, who has seen some of the best and worst moments at Ft. Hood. No matter what anyone's mood is on any given day, Capt. Davis will lift your spirits with a kind word or a pat on the back. She is a great role model for any female service member and was today's "rider of the day" as voted by her peers. |
On day 4, Thursday, April 14, the ride heads north to Waco and the first nine miles are some of the most special as the group will ride through Ft. Hood.
