Day three of the UnitedHealthcare 9/11 Challenge featured a ride from Philadelphia, PA to Newark, NJ.  One of the day's stops was at the Buck's County 9/11 Memorial, the home county of United flight #175's pilot, Victor Saracini, whose plane crashed in the South WTC Tower. His widow, Ellen, spoke to the group about the five year history of the park and shared some stories about her husband.

United Airlines sponsored this Challenge as a way of paying tribute to all 2,997 who lost their lives on 9/11, including 18 United employees. "Honoring those we lost, one mile at a time," was the theme of the ride. To honor those, the participants wore United Airlines cycling kits during the day.

Among those riding were four United employees, including flight attendant Linda Lotto. Linda found the experience quite different than she expected, with it being much more emotional and uplifting.

Day four was the annual ride to breakfast at Macy's and a visit to Ground Zero. Macy's has been supporting Ride 2 Recovery's program for five years and this year's guest speaker was NFL Hall of Famer Harry Carson. Carson has been a strong advocate for research on TBI, concussions, and the resulting mental health issues plaguing NFL players that are very similar to those suffered by members of the military.

On Wednesday participants also rode by the New York Headquarter office of title sponsor UnitedHealthcare. Many of the employees came out to cheer on the riders as they rode by.

Honoring those lost

To honor the 18 United Airline employees killed on 9/11, a wreath with 18 roses was placed at the survivor tree at Ground Zero.

"In October 2001, the tree was discovered at Ground Zero severely damaged, with snapped roots and burned and broken branches. The tree was removed from the rubble and placed in the care of the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation. After its recovery and rehabilitation, the tree was returned to the Memorial in 2010. New, smooth limbs extended from the gnarled stumps, creating a visible demarcation between the tree’s past and present. Today, the tree stands as a living reminder of resilience, survival and rebirth." stated Anthony Gardner of the 9/11 museum, who also lost a brother during the 9/11 attacks.

Thank you to everyone who made this ride possible, including UnitedHealthcare, United Airlines, USO, Macy's, and many others. Also a thank you to all of the warriors who find hope, recovery, and resilience from their participation in this program, and to the staff and volunteers who helped make it such a great success.
